About Space Rocks
Space Rocks is a retro space game redrawn in glowing neon lines on a black sky. You pilot a tiny triangle ship in the middle of the screen, surrounded by big space rocks that drift and tumble. Every large rock you hit breaks into two medium ones, every medium rock into two small ones, and the small ones crumble to dust. Clear them all and the next wave rolls in with more rocks, moving faster.
Your ship doesn't steer like a car. Fire the engine and it picks up speed and keeps drifting the same way, slowing down only gently. Fly off one edge of the screen and you come back on the other, and so do the rocks and your shots. The whole game is a balance between turning, aiming and shooting, and not building up so much speed that you slam into a rock.
Every so often a flying saucer cruises across. The big one sprays shots anywhere, while the small one, which shows up in later waves, aims right at you. In a tight spot, hyperspace throws you to a random place on the screen, with a small risk. Large rocks are worth 20, medium 50, small 100, and the small saucer 1000. You start with 3 ships and earn an extra one every 10,000 points.
How to play
- Press “Play now”, then “Start”.
- Turn the ship towards a rock and shoot it; the pieces it breaks into move faster.
- Use short bursts of engine so you move without losing control.
- Shoot the flying saucer before it shoots you, especially the small one that aims.
- Clear every rock to start a new wave with more, faster rocks.
Controls
| Keyboard | Left/Right arrows or A/D turn the ship on the spot (the ship's own left and right), Up or W fires the engine, Space shoots, and Shift, Down or S jumps to hyperspace. |
|---|---|
| Mouse | The ship turns to face the mouse by itself. Hold the left button to shoot; if the pointer is far from the ship, it also flies towards it. The right button is engine only, and the middle button jumps to hyperspace. |
| Touch | Buttons under the game: ⟲ and ⟳ turn, 🔥 fires the engine, ● shoots and ✦ jumps to hyperspace. You can hold two at once, like turning and shooting together. |
Tips to win
- Don't break all the large rocks at once: a swarm of small pieces is more dangerous than one slow big rock.
- Stay near the middle and turn on the spot; only fire the engine when a rock gets close.
- Shots wrap around the screen edges, so you can hit a rock behind you from the other side.
- Hyperspace is a last resort: it might drop you right next to a rock.
Space Rocks: questions and answers
What is Space Rocks?
A remake of the old-school spaceship game: a triangle ship turns and shoots space rocks that split into smaller pieces, with flying saucers and waves that get harder. Many people look for it as an asteroid shooter or a retro space rocks game.
Can I play with just the mouse?
Yes. The ship turns to face the pointer, the left button shoots, and when the pointer is far away the ship flies towards it. To move without shooting, hold the right button.
How do I play on a phone or tablet?
Buttons under the game turn left and right, fire the engine, shoot and jump to hyperspace. You can press more than one at the same time.
Is it violent?
No. Rocks crumble into specks of light, and when your ship crashes it breaks into spinning lines and then comes back. No blood and nothing scary, so it suits players from about 7 up.
Do I need to download or sign up?
No, it plays online for free in your browser on computers and phones, and your best score is saved on your device.
